The 2006 WRI International Conference: Appeal to WRI Affiliates

The 2006 WRI “Triennial” conference will be a decisive event in shaping the future of our organisation and our movement. Please make a note of the dates: the open conference will be from 23 to 27 July, while the WRI business meeting will be on 28-29.

War Resisters' International is committed to "strive for the removal of all causes of war". War profiteers, companies profiting from war, are one of the causes of war. For the past year, War Resisters' International has been working on the development of a new WRI campaign against war profiteers, based on our understanding that "war is a crime against humanity".

Howard Clark says in his article in the The Broken Rifle No.67: "War profiteers has been a permanent feature of the military landscape. It is not just that the search for profit can foment war.

By Joanne Sheehan, WRI Chair

It is an honor to be here and an honor for War Resisters' International to receive the Friedrich Siegmund-Schultze Award.

War Resisters' International is based on the declaration made by each member that "War is a crime against humanity. I am therefore determined not to support any kind of war and to strive for the removal of all causes of war." A WRI network of more than 85 pacifists groups in over 40 countries has a commitment to this declaration. And that number continues to grow.

The changes in Georgia might not be as positive as it seems on first viewAfter the parliamentary elections in Georgia on 2 November the opposition was very quick to shout "fraud"! What followed then was a well orchestrated wave of protests, which brought the Caucasus state to the brink of a civil war, and lead in the end to the resignation of president Eduard Shevardnardze. However, there is only one serious candidate for the new presidential elections, to be held in January: Saakashvili, the leader of the opposition movement. A revolution in Georgia? Hardly.
