ISRAEL: Refusers Tamar Alon and Tamar Zeevi imprisoned for the fourth time

Conscientious objectors Tamar Alon and Tamar Ze'evi from Israel were imprisoned again for their refusal to serve in the army.

This is Tamar and Tamar's fourth imprisonment following their declaration of conscientious objection in front of Tel Hashomer military induction base on November 16, 2016. By the time their latest sentence comes to an end, both refusers will have spent a total of 74 days in total behind bars.

Alon and Ze’evi’s declarations

In her declaration, Tamar Ze’evi says “The choice not to enlist means to take responsibility for my actions and their meaning, drawing a moral line that I'm not willing to cross, and actively resisting a government and a policy that violates human rights and fueling violent and cruel reality.” See Ze'evi's full declaration here.

Refusing to serve in the army, Tamar Alon says “I met my parent's Palestinian friends from a young age. I met people that were supposed to be my enemies, but they smiled at me, played with me and talked to me. These early experiences have taught me to look at the daily reality of the Palestinians and the reality of my own life in a critical manner. I cannot accept the claim that the oppression of another nation, the denial of basic human rights, racism and hatred are essential to Israel's existence.”
