6 Annual statistics
The armed forces comprise 9,700 troops - which is just over 0.1 percent of the population. It is estimated that 7,500 are serving conscripts. 
Furthermore there is a 7,000 strong people's militia, a 1,600 strong Republican Guard and a 1,000 strong Gendarmerie. 
Every year approximately 65,000 men reach conscription age.
