Keep the Pressure on McCain: Torture is Wrong

Click here to watch Father Roy Bourgeois' video message and sign the petition to Sen. John McCain!

More than 20,000 people signed the petition urging Senator McCain to renounce torture, since TrueMajority.org, USAction, Catholics United and School of the Americas Watch released an online video of a former military interrogator, who calls on John McCain to speak out against torture.

In 2005, McCain was a leader in the struggle against torture by sponsoring legislation to ban U.S. military personnel from using torture as an interrogation tactic. This year, though, McCain abandoned his principled stand in an apparent effort to appease the Republican leadership and voted against the very same torture ban.

In a newly released online video, Father Roy Bourgeois, a Catholic priest, torture survivor, Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient, is adding his voice to the chorus by calling on John McCain from a religious perspective and as a fellow torture survivor to regain his morale footing stand up against torture.

Watch this video message from Father Roy Bourgeois and pass it on to family, co-workers and friends. Then join Fr. Roy and call on Sen. McCain to stop all forms of torture - no exceptions.

Take it to the Streets at the RNC and the DNC

Put the closing of the School of the Americas (SOA/WHINSEC) and the demand for a fundamental change of U.S. foreign policy on the agenda of the Republican and the Democratic conventions.

SOA Watch will be represented in Denver at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) protest as part of Recreate 68, which includes many progressive organizations working for true change! Two of the SOA Watch National Grassroots Council members will be in attendance: Theresa Cameranesi of the SOA Watch West region and Gray Newman of the SOA Watch Southeast region. For more information and to be in touch when you get to Denver, contact Gray Newman at dibloc[@]aol.com or (704) 609-3160

SOA Watch founder Father Roy Bourgeois will travel to the Republican National Convention (RNC) protest in St. Paul/Minneapolis, where he will be one of the featured speakers at the Veterans for Peace Convention.

Use the convention protests as a springboard for the organizing for the November Vigil at the gates of Fort Benning. The Nov. 21-23 vigil will follow the presidential election by two weeks. It will be an opportunity for the progressive movement to push for the closure of the SOA/WHINSEC and to set an agenda against oppressive U.S. foreign policy, whatever the result of that election is.

Million Doors for Peace

September 20, 2008 - National Day of Action: Be part of one of the most ambitious and innovative anti-war activities to date!

On Saturday, September 20 thousands of volunteers across the U.S. will knock on a Million Doors for Peace.

Volunteer door-knockers will ask people to sign an antiwar petition directed to Congress. Our message? End this immoral war, bring our troops home, and invest in America's future. In addition, we will encourage people to join local anti-war groups and engage in Get out the Vote work.

In order to reach a million people in a single day, the coalition will activate at least 25,000 volunteers in all 50 states. Peace groups have never implemented such an elaborate communication and organizing plan before now, but with new and traditional communications tools available, the coalition anticipates success with this groundbreaking, grassroots project.

We will provide trainings and training materials, petitions, walk map for your preferred canvass area, and handouts

SOA Watch is joining with United for Peace and Justice, US Action/True Majority, Win Without War, MoveOn and other organizations to make this day a success.
