Take Action - Support Human Rights for Colombia
by SOA Watch
Our partners on the front lines of the struggle against SOA/WHINSEC-style violence in Colombia need our support now more than ever. Threats against human rights workers in La Guajira, San Jose de Apartado, and all across the country continue to intensify as communities raise their voices in support of victims of paramilitary violence and against all armed groups in Colombia. Take just a moment to sign this petition now, urging your congressional representative to oppose the Free Trade Agreement with Colombia, immediately close the SOA/WHINSEC, end all military aid to Colombia, and to sign on to a "Dear Colleague" letter being circulated by Representatives McGovern and Schakowsky.
The letter calls on the Colombian government to investigate attacks on human rights workers and to bring those responsible to justice. It also urges President Uribe to take concrete steps to ensure government officials stop making comments that put the lives of human rights defenders at risk.
Today is the last day for your representative to sign on to the McGovern-Schakowsky "Dear Colleague" letter. After you send your online message, follow up to make sure your representative's office received your request. Call your representative today and encourage them to sign this important letter in support of human rights defenders in Colombia. Simply dial the Capitol Switchboard 202-224-3121 to be connected to their office and ask to speak to their foreign policy aide. If your member of Congress is interested in signing on, they should contact Cindy Buhl in Rep. McGovern's office, or Megan Garcia in Rep. Schakowsky's office, by close of business TODAY (Thursday, April 10.) As the administration seeks more aid for war and approval of the U.S.-Colombia free trade agreement, we have to demand our elected officials take human rights seriously.

April 23-26: Hungry for Justice!
April 23-26, 2008 will be a time to organize fasts in your community to bring attention to victims of the SOA/WHINSEC and an opportunity for each of us to commit ourselves to closing this place of injustice.
