[newsfromthenetwork] SOAW 11 Report to Prison; SOAW.ORG Temporarily Offline!

SOA Watch Update 04/03/2008
=================================
SOAW.ORG IS TEMPORARILY DOWN
=================================

The SOA Watch website is currently
experiencing technical difficulties and
will be under maintenance for the next
48 hours. We apologize for the
inconvenience and thank you for your
patience and support. In the meantime,
feel free to contact the SOAW office
for information regarding the April
Fast and the SOAW 11 by emailing us at
info@soaw.org or calling 202-234-3440.

==================================================
PRISONERS OF CONSCIENCE REPORT TO
PRISON TODAY!
==================================================

Nine of the SOAW 11 will be reporting
to federal prison today to serve
sentences ranging from 30-90 days for
their nonviolent witness in opposition
to the SOA/WHINSEC. The SOAW 11 were
sentenced in federal court on January
28, 2008 carrying the protest to close
the School of the Americas
(SOA/WHINSEC) onto the Fort Benning
Military Reservation, publicly defying
the laws which prevent political speech
on military bases and making a bold
call for justice and accountability.

Joan Anderson, Ozone Bhaguan, LeAnne
Clausen, Ed Lewinson, Chris Lieberman,
Tiel Rainelli, Gus Roddy, Stephen
Schwietzer and Michelle Yipe will be
reporting to federal prison throughout
today. Diane Lopez-Hughes decided to
self report following her trial and was
released on March 11, 2008 after
serving 45 days in Muscogee County
Jail. Art Landis, of Perkasie, PA, is
expected to report on April 10th.

We ask that you keep the SOAW 11 in
your thoughts, honor them by taking
part in the April Fast to close the
SOA/WHINSEC and send them words of
encouragement and friendship to the

APRIL 23-26: JOIN THE APRIL FAST TO
CLOSE THE SOA/WHINSEC
========================================================

On April 23rd through 26th, thousands
across the Americas will vigil, fast,
organize and pray to close the
SOA/WHINSEC. Events will take place in
seven Latin American countries and all
across the United States, including ten
U.S. prisons where the SOAW 11 are
scheduled to start serving prison
sentences in the following weeks.

We need you to join us!
Can you do something individually or
within community to challenge the
SOA/WHINSEC this April 23rd-26th?

Everyone can do something. You can fast
by yourself for a day, vigil with
others on the steps of your city's
federal building or your local post
office, or set up a meeting with your
member of Congress urging her or him to
cosponsor HR 1707. Groups will hold
screenings of SOA Watch videos at a
house party or do a presentation in a
class to show why we are hungry for
justice. Some folks will fast for the
entire duration of the events, while
others will include the victims of the
SOA/WHINSEC in a prayer service.

Please let us know what you plan on
doing. We will post your individual
actions and group events on our website
so our movement's actions will be
united from Chile to Minnesota.

--> Please e-mail Simon Albrecht at
simon(at)soaw(dot)org or call
202-234-3440 to share your plans.
