March 6, 2008: Colombia Solidarity Day of Action

Vigil for the Disappeared, Displaced, Massacred, & Executed

The Movement of Victims of State Crimes (MOVICE) and a coalition of social and human rights organizations in Colombia are calling for a peaceful mass mobilization to be held on March 6, 2008 in Bogotá and other Colombian cities. They ask that individuals and human rights organizations organize solidarity events around the world to denounce political and military violence in Colombia

Colombia has sent more than 10,000 soldiers to train at the SOA/WHINSEC, more than any other Latin American country. The results are chilling. SOA Watch has documented cases in which SOA/WHINSEC graduates and instructors have been involved in massacres, the killing of striking workers, assassinations, torture and other crimes. The current head of the Colombian Army, General Mario Montoya Uribe, a former instructor at the School of the Americas, has been cited for collaboration with the right-wing paramilitaries. The SOA/ WHINSEC approach of employing military solutions to social and political problems is causing death and suffering for the people of Colombia.

On March 6, join us to accompany the victims of the Paramilitaries, the Parapoliticians and Agents of the state!

No more Common Graves! No more Forced Displacement! No more Paramilitaries! No more crimes by the State! No more U.S. military aid to Colombia!

Pete Seeger Documentary Airing on PBS

In 2003, Pete Seeger was one of the many talented musicians who were part of the SOA Watch November Vigil in Columbus, Georgia. The Jim Brown Production Company followed him the entire weekend as part of a documentary entitled "Pete Seeger: the Power of Song". "The Power of Song" will be airing throughout March on PBS (check local listings for exact time).

At the end of this beautiful documentary, there are a few shots from the November SOAW gathering to which a beautiful arrangement of "To My Old Brown Earth" plays.

Additional footage of the SOAW Stage Musicians' collective singing "Evil of the SOA" will be featured in the DVD extras on both the PBS released version and the wider released version.

SOA Watch Events & Speaking Tours

April 23-25, 2008: Nationwide Fast to Close the SOA/WHINSEC

April 23-25, 2008 will be a time of fasting for SOA Watch; a time to organize fasts in your community to bring attention to SOA/WHINSEC victims and an opportunity for each of us to commit ourselves to closing this place of injustice. Local fasts nationwide will educate the public about the School of the Americas / WHINSEC and the reality of U.S. foreign policy towards Latin America.

To assist you in planning, creating, and executing your April fast or event, the SOA Watch staff has compiled an Organizing Packet with tips on fasting, legislative action, working with your local media and more. The April Fast Organizing Packet is a great resource for you and your community to plan your own fast or event.
