ISRAEL: Eight more refuseniks jailed

en

Over the weekend, eight more refuseniks were jailed in Israel, bringing the total to more than 30, far more than ever was the case before, even at the height of the Lebanon war or during the first intifada. Yesh Gvul, an Israeli organisation supporting refuseniks, reports that the army is now taking a much tougher line, something that was to be expected, especially after the call-up of 30,000 reservists. Last week, more than seven refuseniks were jailed (http://wri-irg.org/news/htdocs/03042002a.html).

First Sgt. Arad Hakim (ISR11992) of Kibbutz Ein Hashofet, and First Sgt. Amnon Hillel (ISR11993) of Kibbutz Ein Hahoresh, were both sentenced to 28 days on April 6.

First Sgt. Kuti Rot (ISR11994) (29) a gardener from Jerusalem, got 28 days for refusing to serve in Hebron.

First Sgt.Ari Boneh (ISR11995) (another kibbutznik) was jailed for 30 days. First Sgt. O.Y. (ISR11996), and First Sgt.O.Y. (ISR11997) (that's not a mistake, both men have the same initials, both asked to have their names withheld) got 28 days each.

Reuven Volochaviansky (ISR11998) (29), of Tel Aviv-Yafo, an instructor at a home for youth in distress, who is studying for his masters degree in criminology - was sentenced to 28 days on April 7 for refusing to recruit members of his reserve unit for service in the territories. Also sentenced on April 7 to 28 days in Military Prison 6 was Capt. (res.) Doron Mota'i (ISR11999).

In addition, there are two further refuseniks in Military Prison 6 who decline to have any identifying details published.

War Resisters' International calls for letters of support to all imprisoned conscientious objectors. According to the information we received from Yesh Gvul, all above mentioned conscientious objectors are imprisoned in Military Prison No 6.
