ISRAEL: Conscientious objectors in prison

en

Three conscientious objectors are presently in prison in Israel. All of them are highly likely to be imprisoned repeatedly.

Misha Hadar (ISR14725) has been sentenced to 21 days in prison on 6 April 2005, for refusing to enlist in the Israeli military. He is due to be released on 22 April, but it is highly likely that he will be imprisoned again. Misha Hadar explained his reasons in detail in a letter to the Minister of Defence. The letter is available at http://www.newprofile.org/showdata.asp?pid=811.

Alex Kohn (ISR14726), a signatory and activist of the recent "seniors' letter" (see http://www.shministim.org/letterenglish.html) reported to the induction base in Tel-Hashomer on 4 April 2005, where he announced his refusal to enlist in the Israeli Armed Forces. He was arrested and sentenced to 21 says in prison. He is due to be released on 22 April, but highly likely to be imprisoned again. Alex Kohn was supposed to be enlisted two weeks earlier, but when he reported to the base then, he was told that his enlistment had been deferred. Alex Kohn had written to the Conscience Committee earlier, asking to be exempted from military service for reasons of conscience. The letter is available at http://www.newprofile.org/showdata.asp?pid=796.

Eyal Brami (ISR14727) is presently serving his first prison term in Military Prison No 6. He is due to be released on 16 April, but he too is highly likely to be imprisoned again.
