War Resisters' International is committed to "strive for the removal of all causes of war". War profiteers, companies profiting from war, are one of the causes of war. For the past year, War Resisters' International has been working on the development of a new WRI campaign against war profiteers, based on our understanding that "war is a crime against humanity".
Howard Clark says in his article in the The Broken Rifle No.67: "War profiteers has been a permanent feature of the military landscape. It is not just that the search for profit can foment war. Military rivalry has also gone hand in hand with industrial and technological mobilisation for war, reaching new heights in the second half of the twentieth century. Those who profit form a powerful lobby in favour of military expenditure and war preparations. To combat their influence requires identifying and exposing their activities and interest".
This letter includes a link to the latest issue of our newsletter The Broken Rifle. This issue focuses on our campaign against war profiteers. You will find information on who are war profiteers, and what they are doing, and examples of campaigns by groups of the WRI network. Frida Berrigan shares her experience in researching war profiteers in the USA, which can be used as a starting point for your own research. And finally we explore how the campaign against war profiteers has developed and what our challenges are.
I encourage you to read this issue of The Broken Rifle with an open eye on how you can get involved in the campaign. One of our activities is the development of resources on war profiteers, resources that can be used by our network in local and international campaigns. We have set up a Wiki (an internet based collaboration tool, which allows anyone to view and add information) on our website, and we invite you to contribute to this Wiki with your own information on war profiteers (see http://wri-irg.org/wiki).
The slogan of WRI's campaign is "Stop War Profiteers. War is a crime against humanity." We hope that this campaign will strengthen the WRI network, and will be a small step in striving for the removal of all causes of war. For this campaign to be successful, we need your involvement, and your contribution. We ask you to give generously to support WRI's campaign against war profiteers, and WRI's work for the removal of all causes of war.
Thank you.
