Britain: Unveiling of a Monument to Conscientious Objectors

en

In London, International CO Day was marked by the unveiling of a memorial to conscientious objectors in Tavistock Square. The inscription on the slab of 450-million-year-old Cumbrian rock reads "To all those who have established and are maintaining the right to refuse to kill. Their foresight and courage give us hope". The stone was unveiled by the President of the Peace Pledge Union, British composer Sir Michael Tippett, himself a CO during World War II, in front of a crowd of 150 pacifists. The appeal launched by the Peace Pledge Union raised £7,000 for the memorial so far. Further donations can be sent to the Peace Pledge Union, 6 Endsleigh Street, London WC1 0DX.
