Bosnia-Herzegovina
05/11/1997
Following its achievement of independence, the former Yugoslav republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina (RBiH) was in war for several years. On 20 July 1992 President Izetbegovic proclaimed a state of war. During the war, all the protagonists - the Bosnian government forces, the former Yugoslav Peoples' Army (YPA), the Bosnian Serb forces and the Bosnian Croat forces (HVO) - recruited whoever they could.
The war came to an end with the 14 December 1995 Dayton peace agreement, which divided the country into two parts: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the Republika Srpska. Although a Presidency, Government and Assembly of Bosnia and Herzegovina representing both entities exist, defence matters are the responsibility of the authorities in these two parts. Therefore the Federation and the Republika Srpska are treated separately in this report.
