Dear Mr Shaul Mofaz, Minister of Defence

I am very concerned about the imprisonment of feminist conscientious objector Idan Halili.
Idan Halili refuses to enlist in the Israeli Army based on her feminist beliefs and conscience. However, she was refused a hearing by the 'Conscience Committee', when she applied for exemption from military service based on reasons of conscience. On 15 November, she was sentenced to 14 days in prison, and she is likely to be reimprisoned after he release on 28 November.
The UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention in opinion 24/2003 on Israel came to the conclusion that the repeated imprisonment of conscientious objectors in Israel is arbitrary, and therefore it constitutes a violation of 14 par 7 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, of which Israel is a signatory.
Idan Halili claims her human right to conscientious objection, as guaranteed by Article 18 of the ICCPR, and Article 39(c) of the Defence Service Law, which grants the right to conscientious objection to women.
I therefore urge you to immediately release all imprisoned conscientious objectors. I urge you to respect human rights.
